Purpose and Background

Current building codes require all buildings and structures to be designed and constructed to resist the applicable design wind loads. For the vast majority of the U.S., the design wind loads are determined in accordance with the applicable provisions of ASCE 7. This webinar will address the significant changes in the wind load design procedures of the 2010 Edition of ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. The implications to strength design and allowable stress design resulting from the new strength design-level wind speed maps will be discussed. A new simplified procedure for Main Wind-Force Resisting System (MWFRS) and Component and Cladding loads has been added for buildings up to 160 feet high. The design of the MWFRS is now specifically covered by two Design Procedures: Directional Procedure and Envelope Procedure. A corresponding simplified method is provided for each procedure. This webinar will also address the changes to the Envelope Procedure (formerly the MWFRS provisions for low-rise buildings of Method 2 in ASCE 7-05) and discuss the causes for improper application and interpretation of this method in ASCE 7-05 and ASCE 7-02. The webinar will conclude with a discussion on the refinements to the provisions for roof overhangs, signs, rooftop structures, and the minimum design wind loads.
