Purpose and Background
The newest edition of ASCE 7 (2010) includes many significant technical and organizational changes to the General Requirements for Determining Wind Loads from the 2005 Edition (ASCE 7-05). This webinar will address many of those significant changes. The General Requirements include the basic wind speed maps, exposure categories, enclosure classification, gust effects, directionality factor, among others. The wind load provisions have undergone a substantial reorganization to improve the clarity of applicability for the various design methods and procedures. The reorganization concepts in addition to transition tools will be discussed. The basic wind speed maps have been updated to reflect strength design-level wind speeds while also incorporating newly available data. The impact of the new wind speed maps, in addition to correlation with allowable stress design will be thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the new wind speed maps necessitated a recalibration of the wind-borne debris region. These changes, along with many others will be covered in this webinar. Attendees will gain an acute understanding of the changes to the general requirements for determining wind loads in ASCE 7, in addition to a thorough explanation of the rationale for changes to the provisions. The impact of these changes on the design of buildings for wind loads will be clearly demonstrated with illustrations and examples as applicable.
