This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute and ASCE Continuing Education.
Instructor: Alexander Newman, P.E., F.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
Like other structures, steel-framed buildings occasionally suffer from design and construction errors. Alternatively, the loading on the framing might change from that assumed in the design, which could be caused by owner-initiated changes, new code provisions, or fast-track construction. Occasionally, steel members become damaged during transportation, erection, or in service.
These errors or deficiencies could be discovered before, during, or after construction. What to do then? The main choices include accepting the structure as is, making repairs, or replacing some of the framing. This webinar explores the circumstances when each option might be appropriate, but focuses on the second approach – corrective work. Participants will learn about the practical methods of repairing and strengthening various types of steel framing, including structural steel, metal building systems, and open-web joists. The challenging topics of correcting deficiencies in connections and anchor bolts are discussed as well. Design details and case studies illustrate various repair or strengthening techniques.
Learning Outcomes
- Know when deficient steel framing could be repaired, when it should be replaced, and when the framing could be accepted as is
- Become familiar with the main challenges of reinforcing and strengthening steel structures and with the strategies for meeting them
- Identify how to repair and strengthen various types of steel structures and systems
Webinar Benefits
- Discover the basic options for dealing with steel framing that is damaged or does not possess a sufficient load-carrying capacity
- Find out how to strengthen structural steel framing, metal building systems, and open-web joists
- Learn about correcting deficiencies in steel connections and anchor bolts
- Explore practical methods of repairing archaic steel framing, such as cast, malleable and wrought iron
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- Structural and civil engineers
- Architects, contractors, and building officials

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
