Purpose and Background

ASCE 7’s wind chapters apply to “regular-shaped buildings” as defined in Chapter 26 and its commentary. Engineering judgment is required for other building shapes, such as T, L, and U plan shapes, multi-ridge/hip/gable roof systems, and/or single or multi-level roofs. There is no one wind resource which describes how to address non-rectangular low-rise buildings. This webinar will review available wind load concepts, studies, advice from wind experts, and design examples related to wind loading of nonuniform building shapes. It will also outline current and future efforts to provide one holistic approach to non-rectangular low-rise buildings in ASCE 7 wind Chapters, as well as offer attendees the opportunity to share their design approaches. This webinar is useful for engineers of all experience levels, from students to senior designers. Its goal is to help engineers establish a sound basis for their engineering judgment.
