Metal plate connected wood (MPCW) trusses are engineered structural components assembled from lumber and metal connector plates. MPCW trusses are typically designed using proprietary software developed by the connector plate manufacturers. This software is dedicated exclusively to the design of trusses and contains the connector plate and lumber properties required for this design. Because of the proprietary nature of the software, MPCW truss designs are often sealed by specialty engineers familiar with the design and application of trusses. The specialty engineer’s seal on the truss design drawing can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations as to their overall role and responsibility in the design and construction process for a particular project. This webinar discusses the roles and responsibilities, from the perspective of the truss industry, of the various parties involved in a typical construction project involving MPCW trusses. Webinar attendees will also gain a better understanding of the information provided on a truss design drawing.

Purpose and Background

MPCW trusses are designed as individual structural elements by component manufacturers using proprietary software developed by the connector plate manufactures. The truss manufacturer is independent of the connector plate manufacturer, but through contractual agreement, uses the plate manufacturer’s software and metal connector plates to design and manufacture the trusses. Component manufacturers can provide sealed truss design drawings in one of two ways: employ a professional engineer or contract with a company that provides professional truss design engineering services. The specialty engineer’s seal on the truss design drawing certifies that the truss, if manufactured according to the information provided in the drawing, will work for the design conditions shown. However, the adequacy of the truss design for the actual conditions it will be used in must be verified by the building designer.
