This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: Robert G. Pekelnicky, P.E., S.E., LEED AP
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
Significant changes to how seismic evaluations and retrofits will be carried out are just around the corner with the pending publication of the 2017 edition of ASCE/SEI 41 Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings. This webinar highlights the most significant updates to the provisions including specific discussions on revisions to the basic performance objective for existing buildings, revised Tier 1 and Tier 2 procedures, significant linear and nonlinear analysis provision changes, nonstructural provision changes, and changes to the criteria for steel and concrete columns.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Revisions to the basic performance objective for existing building
- Changes to force-controlled element forces in linear procedures
- Significant updates to the nonlinear dynamic procedure
- Updates to the tier 1 and tier 2 deficiency-based procedures
- High level summaries of changes to the construction material specific provisions in ASCE 41-17
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify changes to the BPOE and explain how they may affect seismic evaluation and retrofit in different parts of the country
- Identify the reasons for the updated tier 1 and tier 2 procedures
- Explain how and why demands on force-controlled actions are being changed for both linear and nonlinear procedures
- Explain why the nonlinear response history analysis procedure was updated and identify what is different from the previous edition's
- List the changes to the material provisions, including significant revisions to how steel and concrete column modeling and acceptance criteria will affect evaluation and retrofit
Webinar Benefits
- Find out the coming changes to a widely used national consensus standard from those who led the development of it
- Avoid using a seismic hazard that under-predicts the hazards your building site faces
- Examine how to specify target seismic performance objectives for existing buildings that you are tasked with evaluating
- Develop an understanding on how to apply the nonlinear dynamic procedure to better assess an existing building
- Learn why using the most recent edition of the standard will provide better prediction of steel frame building performance
- Determine the most appropriate performance objective for nonstructural components
- Become aware of changes in the evaluation procedures for unreinforced masonry buildings
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
