INSTRUCTOR: Keelan Jensen
Purpose and Background
This intensive, workshop-oriented seminar is designed for engineers and water resources professionals seeking practical training in modeling bridges and culverts using the HEC-RAS two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic modeling platform. Led by experts from WEST Consultants with extensive hands-on experience, participants will begin with a brief review of one-dimensional (1D) bridge and culvert modeling concepts as they relate to 2D applications, and then learn how to incorporate these structures into a 2D HEC-RAS model.
The seminar combines targeted lectures with a hands-on workshop that gives participants the opportunity to add bridges and culverts to an existing 2D HEC-RAS model.
This course assumes prior experience or training in 2D HEC-RAS and does not cover general 2D modeling concepts.
HEC-RAS is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center’s (HEC) next-generation software suite. It replaces earlier programs such as HEC-2, UNET, and HEC-6, and supports comprehensive 2D hydraulic modeling capabilities, including channel and overbank flow, storage area interactions, and coupling between 1D and 2D domains.
Prerequisites: Prior experience or training with HEC-RAS 2D is required. This course is intended as a focused extension of the two-day ASCE 2D HEC-RAS course and is not suitable for beginners.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Incorporate bridges into a HEC-RAS 2D model
- Incorporate culverts into a HEC-RAS 2D model
- Gain hands-on HEC-RAS experience by participating in practical computer workshops
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test exam involving true-false and multiple-choice questions.
Who Should Attend?
Consulting engineers, water resource planners, engineers employed by local, state, or federal government agencies.
Outline
- Using bridges within 2D HEC-RAS
- Using culverts within 2D HEC-RAS
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
Upon completion of this course, attendees will receive .4 CEUs /4 PDHs. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 30 days of the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
