Purpose and Background
This presentation was recorded at the ASCE Construction Institute Summit 2025.
This presentation explores the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) project, a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to enhance capacity, safety, and service reliability on some of the busiest transit lines in Chicago. The RPM project involves the complete reconstruction of track infrastructure, modernization of stations, and the introduction of new technologies like a signal and communication system. The presentation delves into the complexities of urban transit engineering, emphasizing the need for phased construction to maintain service during upgrades. It also highlights the extensive stakeholder engagement, environmental considerations, and logistical challenges involved in a dense urban environment. Special attention is given to the project’s phased approach, community coordination, and sustainability initiatives. Attendees will gain insights into large-scale transit infrastructure design, execution, and the integration of modern solutions to legacy systems.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the key components and goals of the CTA Red and Purple Modernization project.
- List the major phases and infrastructure elements included in the RPM program.
- Identify challenges associated with reconstructing transit infrastructure in a dense urban environment.
- Discuss how stakeholder engagement and community coordination influence infrastructure project outcomes.
- Explain the engineering strategies used to maintain service continuity during large-scale transit reconstruction.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-test assessment (true-false, multiple choice, and/or fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
- Construction Engineers
- Structural Engineers
- Project Managers
- General Contractors
- Early Career Professionals
How to Earn Your CEU/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
This course is worth 0.1 CEU/1 PDH. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 365 days of course purchase.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
