Purpose and Background

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is an innovative urban planning strategy that promotes the development of compact, walkable, mixed-use communities centered around high-quality public transit systems. This presentation will provide overview of TOD principles, highlighting its role in addressing critical urban challenges like population growth, climate change, and economic resilience. Participants will explore successful TOD case studies (San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in California and Saint Paul in Minnesota), gain insights into effective planning and financing, and discuss the challenges of implementation, such as zoning regulations and community engagement.

This presentation emphasizes the potential of TOD to create sustainable, inclusive, and economically vibrant cities by reducing car dependency, encouraging transit use, and promoting affordable housing. TOD fosters collaboration between public and private sectors, enabling long-term urban sustainability. This session is designed to equip policymakers, planners, and developers with the tools to incorporate TOD into urban development strategies.
