Purpose and Background
Linear Scheduling provides a simple, effective way to visually model production-driven projects providing crucial insights into the interaction of production activities and their effect on total project duration. Precedence Order Diagram network schedules (commonly referred to as CPM or Critical Path Method schedules) have become the ubiquitous, default scheduling technique employed as project controls since their development in the mid-1900’s. For production-driven projects, network schedules have several distinct disadvantages, among these are unrealistic precedence relationships, difficulty understanding and accurately quantifying “Float”, and treating linear projects where production rates drive the schedule like non-linear projects where trade coordination drives the schedule. Linear Scheduling techniques provide easily accessible tools to develop production-driven schedules, analyze relationships between activities, and optimize construction schedules either with or without purchasing proprietary scheduling software.
This seminar will introduce attendees to the concepts associated with an overview of Project Planning, Scheduling, and Controls, introduce Key Terminology, conduct Production Activity Takeoffs and Work Sequencing, assembling a Linear Schedule, Production Optimization, Schedule Adjustments and Updates, and how to conduct Forensic Analysis using Linear Scheduling for Changes and Claims. Attendees will apply skills and techniques in practical exercises designed to improve their understanding and confidence in developing production-driven linear schedules for new projects and to analyze changes and claims.
