Purpose and Background
Performance-based design approaches are increasingly being implemented in structural engineering practice. Although design for fire safety has been primarily based on prescriptive building codes, ASCE 7-16 allows for performance-based design procedures for fire effects on structures. This technical session provides an introduction to structural fire engineering for practicing structural engineers and structural engineering students. The presentation will consist of a general overview of structural fire engineering, followed by design methodologies and resources for steel, concrete, and timber structures.
This techsession will only award PDHs.
Session Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe fundamental concepts of general structural fire engineering, including design fires and thermal-structural analysis.
- Apply structural fire engineering methodologies to steel, concrete, and timber structures.
- Identify technical resources for additional design guidance.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes are assessed and achieved through review of the participation in the live content and Q/A with our speakers and if the course is taken OnDemand, there will also be a 10 multiple choice question post-test.
