INSTRUCTOR:
Abdolreza (Reza) Osouli, Ph.D., P.E.
Purpose and Background
Mine subsidence engineering is a multidisciplinary field in engineering. This technical presentation will brief the audience on the fundamental elements of underground mining as it relates to overlying construction. Building on these fundamental principles, various construction site mining scenarios will be given, and a basic understanding of the various risk factors will be provided. This presentation will also cover how the architect can approach mining related problems and the associated pros and cons of the solutions. The talk will touch on all aspects of subsidence engineering, providing case history examples for illustration, and will be presented assuming the audience has limited experience in subsidence.
Benefits and Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain how the architect can approach mining related problems and the associated pros and cons of the solutions
- Utilize cost-effective measures where subsidence mitigation is necessary
- Explain the general design guidelines at sites with subsidence potential
- Characterize architectural response of structures to subsidence damages through case histories
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
Civil Engineers, Architects, Land Developers
Outline
- Mining related problems and the associated pros and cons of the solutions
- Utilize cost-effective measures where subsidence mitigation is necessary
- Design guidelines at sites with subsidence potential
- Architectural response of structures to subsidence damages through case histories
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
This course is worth .1 CEU/1 PDH. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 30 days of the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
