Purpose and Background
Designing a surge protection system for a water transmission system could be a challenging process where the designer has the possibility of using a combination of numerous surge protection measures. The recourse to rapid transient hydraulic simulations tools is a must; however, various pitfalls need to be avoided.
This webinar presents a brief introduction about rapid transient events (pressure surges). It also discusses the role of various surge protections devices, and which and under which conditions devices can be combined. The webinar presents simple cases to start, then it shows more elaborate case studies in review to present examples of traps to be avoided in conducting surge analysis studies.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the water hammer in water transmission system
- Discuss how to select appropriate surge protection systems
- Learn how to set the characteristics/specifications of surge protection devices
- Learn how to use hydraulic modeling tools to simulate water hammer and validate the selection of surge protection devices
- Properly design a surge protection system
- Select appropriate surge protection devices and set their characteristics/parameters
- Avoid pitfalls in surge analysis modeling
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Who Should Attend?
Civil engineers, Hydraulic engineers, and anyone interested in understanding surge protection systems.
Outline
- Overview of the water hammer in water transmission systems
- Overview of surge protection devices and their associated roles and hydraulic parameters
- Simple examples and demonstration of the role of each protection device
- Combination of protection devices
- Surge analysis using mathematical modeling: model parameters
- Applied case studies: hints and pitfalls to be avoided
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
This online course is worth .2 CEUs/2 PDHs. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 30 days of the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
