INSTRUCTOR:
Jimmy Mitchell, LEED AP BD+C
Course Length: 2 hours
Purpose and Background
The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design is the first building in Georgia and 28th in the world to earn Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification, the world's most ambitious and holistic green building achievement. Rather than being less bad for the environment and people, The Kendeda Building fosters regenerative systems. This not only includes a relationship between humans and nature where we give back more than we take, but also restorative relationships amongst people themselves.
This session is the second in the series. Jimmy will discuss the materials petal focusing on the reuse and the red list, which is defined as the "worst in class" materials, chemicals, and elements known to pose serious risks to human health and the greater ecosystem that are prevalent in the building products industry. The reuse economy and how the reuse examples at Kendeda showcase ways to grow the capacity of this new industry sector. Will describe how the reuse industry positively impacts workforce development, carbon emissions, and reduction of landfill materials. The red list is a detailed process form removing harmful chemicals from our product harvesting, production, and installation. Jimmy will share red list stories from Kendeda and explain due diligence for getting to the right product selection.
