Instructor information: William L. Coulbourne, P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute and ASCE Continuing Education
Purpose and Background
The loads important for consideration during construction include live and dead loads; those imposed by the construction process including equipment loads, erection and fitting forces, and equipment reactions; lateral earth pressure; and environmental loads including those from wind, snow, and earthquakes. This webinar will provide technical information important to determining loads on structures during construction in accordance with ASCE 37 Design Loads on Structures during Construction.
Primary Discussion Topics
The speaker will discuss:
- Scope of the standard
- Loads covered and load combinations
- Dead and live load considerations
- Construction load considerations
- Lateral earth pressure considerations
- Environmental load considerations
Learning Outcomes/Benefits
The following learning outcomes have been established for webinar participants:
- Know how to determine what loads to consider during construction and how these loads might influence the construction process
- Gain an understanding of the provisions of this standard on design loads for consideration during construction
- Gain an understanding of the issues that must be considered in applying the provisions of this standard and how the provisions might affect construction sequencing and/or require additional temporary measures to safely construct certain types of facilities
- Learn what the limitations are in the use of this standard and how many other standards might need to be researched in order to have thorough and current information about these temporary construction loads
Intended Audience
The level of instruction is appropriate for structural engineers who are involved in determining the magnitude of loads that must be considered during construction. The primary audience is structural engineers who have some experience in the construction of buildings and other types of structures such as bridges.
