Purpose and Background
This webinar will provide technical information important to consider when designing shelters for use in either tornadoes or high wind events such as hurricanes. The instructor will use the wind load provisions of ASCE 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, the ICC-500 Storm Shelter Standard and FEMA 361, Design and Construction Guidance for Community Safe Rooms as the basis for the presentation.
The subject of shelter design captures the attention of many after a high wind event, especially if there are those who were saved from injury or death because they were in a shelter during the event. It is important for design professionals to know how to apply the current wind design standards to this unique and important problem. Aspects of construction and project administration will also be mentioned so designers can be better prepared to manage their own risk during the project execution.

This webinar will provide engineers with sufficient information about how to apply the wind load provisions in ASCE 7-10 and the missile impact standards in the ICC-500 and FEMA 361 documents in a successful design. The material has been developed in a way that assumes some experience with wind design issues and methodology. The newly revised sections in ASCE 7-10 are referenced as strength design issues are important in shelter design.

The level of instruction is appropriate for engineers with some knowledge of the wind provisions of ASCE 7-10 and how to apply those provisions to design situations. The primary audience is structural engineers who have some experience at performing designs for buildings and other structures.
