View Important Policies and System Requirements for this course.
This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: Dave K. Adams, S.E., M.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
Explicit code requirements generally leave little room for different interpretations, and therefore lead to a reduced variability in how those provisions apply to real situations. This means that they are easier to enforce, simpler to understand, and offer better consistency among all building structures. Implicit code requirements have far greater potential for leading an engineer to discover creative solutions to design problems; however, a downside is that that they are more difficult to enforce consistently. The purpose of this webinar is to teach attendees how to recognize both explicit and implicit code requirements and how to optimize the use of each in real world engineering situations. The primary codes used in this webinar are ASCE 7-10 and the 2012 International Building Code. Supplemental building codes are ACI 318-11, ACI 530-11, AISC 360-10, AISC 341-10, and AF&PA SDPWS-08.
Primary Discussion Topics
The speaker will discuss:
- Purpose and philosophy of building codes
- Implicit versus explicit code requirements
- Discovering the intent of the codes
- Evaluating "alternative designs and methods" that meet code intents
- Benefits to a proper balance of implicit and explicit code requirements
- Communication skills related to justifying design decisions
- Examples
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discover "alternative designs and methods" per 2012 I.B.C., Section 104.11
- Find effective strategies for optimizing the use of implicit and explicit code requirements
- Have an improved understanding of ASCE 7-10 and the 2012 I.B.C.
- Determine the philosophy behind code construction
- Recognize the difference between implicit and explicit code requirements
- Develop tools that will allow for better communication with plans examiners and building inspectors
Webinar Benefits
- Become familiar with provisions of ASCE 7-10 and the 2012 I.B.C
- Understand the differences between implicit and explicit code requirements
- Study the procedure for choosing an "alternate design/method" that meets the intent of the code
- Examine the optimization of implicit and explicit code requirements
- Learn how to incorporate provisions of multiple building codes related to a single design topic
- Discover the elements of a cost-effective design
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
The content is suitable for structural engineers, building officials, plans examiners, building inspectors, and code development officials. The instruction will be moderate to advanced, but anyone with an interest in interpreting the provisions of the building codes will benefit.
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
