This presentation addresses the theme of challenges and opportunities in site characterization and seismic hazard analysis. It delves into the latest methodologies for developing hard rock site adjustment factors and their application to NGA West ground motion models. The session examines the limitations of existing models, particularly their applicability to hard rock sites, and proposes new approaches to address these gaps. It includes an analytical method for deriving continuous hard rock adjustment factors for a range of VS30 values, constrained by empirical data to ensure accuracy. Additionally, the presentation discusses the state-of-the-practice variations in dealing with hard rock site characterization and the implications for seismic hazard analysis. Overall, the session provides advanced insights into improving ground motion prediction and seismic hazard assessment techniques.
