INSTRUCTOR:
Tu Ho, PhD., A.M. ASCE
Course Length: 1 hour
Purpose and Background
This course is in co-sponsorship with the Structural Engineering Institute.
This course focuses on evolutionary algorithm method to solve optimization problems for structures. Fundamental concepts of an optimization problem and evolutionary algorithm are introduced. The audience will learn how to define design variables, constraints, and objectives for the structural optimization problem, and how to integrate evolutionary algorithm into the optimization process. A hybrid system of post-tensioned cross-laminated timber and light-frame wood shear walls is taken as a case study to illustrate the concepts and process.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand fundamental concepts of an optimization problem
- Identify design variables, constraints, and objectives to establish an optimization problem
- Understand evolutionary algorithm and how to integrate this method into the optimization process
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes are assessed and achieved through participation in the live Q/A with our speakers, and by responding to the post- session survey.
