Virtual Workshop Brief
HEC-RAS is a rather complicated 1-D and 2-D hydraulics program that can be easily put together but also easily—and unknowingly—misused. The most common mistake we see is related to bridge modeling. This two part webinar, 90 minutes each, concentrates on 1-Dimensional Bridge Modeling within HEC-RAS. Although many bridge analyses in HEC-RAS are performed in 2-Dimensions, the majority of these analyses are still done in 1-D. Also, if a FEMA model with a bridge was originally performed in HEC-2 or HEC-RAS 1-D, FEMA may require the "effective" model and the "duplicate effective" model to also be done in 1-D.
Dr. David T. Williams (who has taught HEC-RAS and bridge hydraulics to the Federal Highway Administration as well as state and local departments of transportation) presents examples of common geometric mistakes and misunderstandings of bridge parameters using HEC-RAS that could have potentially significant effects on a bridge project’s hydraulic results.
Part 1, Building the Model
This part discusses geometric misrepresentations and the proper placement of cross sections and coefficients within an HEC-RAS model to properly simulate the hydraulic effects of a bridge.
Part 2, Modeling Guidelines
This part details how some of the input parameters should be determined, modeling methods to use for common situations and where within the model they should be placed.
