Purpose and Background
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), issues an annual report on the state of the transportation infrastructure in the United States. Since 1998, the grades have been near failing, averaging only Ds, due to delayed maintenance and underinvestment across most categories. One of the most effective ways of improving the condition of our transportation infrastructure is to make it last longer.
Concrete roads have been used in North America since the early 1900s. The report of the 1914 National Conference on Concrete Roadbuilding contained over 260 pages of guidelines on all aspects of concrete pavement design and construction. Numerous road tests were conducted over the years and considerable research and development has been done in the past 30 years. However, poor performance of concrete pavements is still not uncommon.
This webinar examines the basic design principals of rigid (concrete surfaced) pavements to give participants a good understanding of what matters to ensure the maximum pavement life possible. While processes and procedures are in place for both quality control and quality assurance, changes and variations in the materials, weather conditions, contractor operations, etc. can have a significant impact on the life of the pavement.
