This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: Dave K. Adams, P.E., S.E., M.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
Steel ordinary moment frames are often selected to create an economical structural system for both building and non-building structures, but their use is limited in higher seismic design category regions. Additionally, the design process for frames constructed of unconventional shapes is not very clear in AISC 360-10 or AISC 341-10. Frames that are built of anything other than wide-flange members may fall into the category of "alternative designs" and an engineer needs to understand how to produce a reliable, defensible design that complies with the intent of ASCE 7-10. This webinar discusses what constitutes an alternative design. It presents procedures for different seismic design category regions.
Primary Discussion Topics
- What is an "alternative design"?
- Procedures for different seismic design category regions
- Example: Moment frame using HSS members
- Example: Moment frame using truss members
- Example: Knee-braced moment frame
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Comprehend the scope of restrictions and design requirements from ASCE 7-10
- Determine appropriate sections for design from AISC 360-10 and AISC 341-10
- Know how to calculate three different types of alternative moment frames
Webinar Benefits
- Understand the provisions of ASCE 7-10, AISC 360-10 and AISC 341-10 relative to steel ordinary moment frames
- Learn how to calculate the nominal strength and deflection of three alternative frame systems
- Discover economical applications for building and non-building structures
- Determine how the codes distinguish between "building" and "non-building" structures
- Defend alternative designs with confidence
- Expand knowledge on how different codes are related to one another
- Examine the differences between ordinary, intermediate, and special moment frames
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- Structural engineers
- Building officials
- Industrial facility managers
- Steel fabricators
Webinar Outline

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
