INSTRUCTOR: Dave K. Adams, P.E., S.E., M.ASCE
Purpose and Background
This online course will walk participants through a number of important steps in the structural design process of a 4-story building constructed with horizontal diaphragms of different materials at different levels. The vertical components of the lateral force resisting systems will make use of concrete (level 1), masonry (level 2), steel (level 3), and wood (level 4). Design codes will include the 2018 International Building Code, ASCE 7-16, NDS-2018, SDPWS-2015, AISC 360-16, AISC 341-16, TMS 402-16, and ACI 318-14. To supplement understanding of the design process, the instructor will also discuss the intent behind code provisions and the process of selecting materials and systems for a project. Practical steps to incorporate sustainability in the structural portion of a project will also be introduced.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the intent behind structural code provisions
- Explain how different codes work together to define building performance
- Specify sustainable material options
- Combine different loads to design selected members and systems
- Recognize different procedures according to seismic design category
- Calculate and distribute lateral forces
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a post course examination and discussion.
Who Should Attend?
Structural engineers, civil engineers, engineering students, and building officials will benefit from this seminar.
