Purpose and Background
Concrete tanks are used extensive in the water, wastewater, oil, and chemical industries to store and convey liquids. The tank geometries are often circular and rectangular. Most circular tanks are typically used for storage and treatment processes, such as clarification, and have a simple geometry with no partitions. However, it is common for the rectangular tanks to include multiple cells and complex channels containing water and/or dry spaces. Concrete tanks are often use for both above grade and below grade applications. In below grade applications, soil seismic forces are also included. Tanks can also include top slabs or roofs. Adequate Freeboard is also required to contain the sloshing wave during a seismic event and avoid any additional stresses affecting the roof.
The primary goal of this webinar is to familiarize structural engineers with the newest practice for the design of concrete structures for seismic forces. It discusses seismic loading, seismic load combinations, tank geometries, buried conditions, freeboard requirements, current and new code requirements, and other design considerations. The webinar provides examples following ASCE 7-16 Minimum Design Loads for Building and Other structures and ACI 350.3-06 Seismic Design of Liquid-Containing Concrete Structures and Commentary.
