System Requirements for Viewing this Course
INSTRUCTOR: George R. Koerner, Ph.D., P.E., CQA
Participants will have access to the virtual workshop video archives and materials for 60 days from the start day of the workshop.
Virtual Workshop Brief
This course provides details on the planning and design of waste containment facilities using geosynthetics. It covers site selection, site development plans, site layout, design, fluids management as well as closure planning. After attending this course, you should have a grasp of specific principles, practices and concepts related to waste containment design, management and construction. In addition, this course also introduces emerging geosynthetic technologies related to the waste containment industry.
Primary Discussion Topics
The course will discuss the design of both landfill and surface impoundment liner and cover systems. It will emphasize geosynthetic properties and how they complement and enhance adjacent soil characteristics. There will be a brief history of waste containment involving contaminants, risks, and a discussion of performance-based design. We will discuss siting facilities, hydrogeologic conditions and groundwater monitoring as they relate to environmental, regulatory, legal, and geotechnical considerations. This technology has a 50-year history of evolving and improving performance through new materials, better designs, integrated construction methods, and construction quality assurance (CQA). We will build on the past successes as well as learn from case histories where short comings exist.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Participants will become familiar with details of geosynthetic and in waste containment facilities. Different designs will be illustrated. This course's goal is to achieve better waste containment facilities. Understanding the idiosyncrasies of these systems will aid in the credibility of the current technology and allow us to move forward with confidence.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain about waste containment and also what went wrong in the past
- Examine the possibilities of designing and building better systems at lower costs
- Apply new geosynthetic solutions and compare with traditional alternatives
- Determine which alternatives work best for your application
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Achievement of the learning outcomes by attendees will be assessed through online discussion and case studies. A short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions) will also be administered.
Who Should Attend
Engineers from all civil engineering disciplines (ex. structural, geotechnical hydraulic, construction and general civil), contractors, (general contractors and specialty contractors) material and product suppliers, mid to upper-level managers.
