INSTRUCTOR: Nazir Lalani, P.E., M.ASCE
Purpose and Background
Roundabout are being constructed in the US at a rapidly increasing rate and have become the first choice to replace stop signs and other forms of controls at intersections in many states; however, the designs of a significant proportion of these roundabouts have been flawed, leading to major operational and safety problems. This webinar is interactive: the instructor presents 25 poorly designed roundabouts and asks the attendees what went wrong to encourage a lively dialogue about what the fixes might be. The resulting discussions are intended to promote understanding of key aspects of roundabout design and the need to conform to the best practices presented in NCHRP Report 672 and other authoritative texts. This webinar presents case studies of three roundabouts with known problems and what was done to correct them.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Geometric problems with roundabouts
- Signing and striping problems with roundabouts
- Sizing problems with roundabouts and mini roundabouts
- Pedestrian and bicycle circulation problems with roundabouts
- Review case studies of roundabouts where problems were corrected
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the five common mistakes in geometric designs of roundabouts and how to correct them including truck traffic
- Describe the five common mistakes in signing and striping roundabouts and how to correct them
- Learn about the six common mistakes in accommodating pedestrians and bicyclists at roundabouts and how to correct them
- Identify the four most important publications which provide the best guidance for design roundabouts for all road users
- Identify the twenty most common mistakes which are made by roundabout designers and how to avoid them
Webinar Benefits
- Understand how to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety community-wide and at specific locations
- Create safe, comfortable, accessible, and welcoming environments for pedestrians and bicyclists
- Enhance walkability, livability, and economic vitality
- Reduce the number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths and injuries in traffic conditions along roads and shared-use paths and at intersections
