INSTRUCTOR: Michelle Kam-Biron, P.E., S.E., SECB, M.ASCE
Purpose and Background
Per the International Building Code (IBC), structures using wood shear walls and diaphragms to resist wind and seismic loads shall be designed and constructed in accordance with American Wood Council’s (AWC) 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). This webinar will discuss the significant changes from the 2008 to the 2015 SDPWS and provisions for distributing shear using the deflection calculation approach and effects on calculated design shear capacity of a shear wall line. A design example will be provided which will be compared aspect ratio adjustments based on stiffness and strength.
Primary Topics of Discussion
- 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) Significant Changes
- Shear Wall Design
- Shear Wall Aspect ratio adjustments
Learning Outcomes
- Explain format and content within the 2015 SDPWS to easily navigate the standard
- Identify the significant changes between the 2008 and 2015 SDPWS.
- Calculate shear distribution based on either i) deflection calculation, or ii) use of reduced shear strengths in accordance with the 2bs/h factor for wood structural panel
- Identify how distribution of shear provisions affects the design shear capacity of shear walls in a line.
Webinar Benefits
- Learn about the format of the SDPWS and how to apply design provisions to shear walls and diaphragms as well as changes from previous editions
- Become familiar with the significant changes between the 2008 and 2015 SDPWS
- Discuss key design considerations that must be considered to ensure the structural performance of wood framed structures with wood shear
Intended Audience
- Structural and civil engineers
- Code officials
- Architects who are interested in or involved with the design of wood framed structures
