This course is just right for modelers wanting to bring ArcHydro, HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS together and advance to the next level. Jean Thibodeaux, J Thibodeaux & Associates, Covington, LA
Participants are required to bring their own laptops with a licensed version of ArcGIS 9.2 or higher pre-installed.Purpose and Background
This workshop-oriented, three-day seminar presents the practical application of the ArcGIS extensions ArcHydro, HEC-GeoHMS, and HEC-GeoRAS. GIS data models and concepts supporting hydraulic and hydrologic modeling are also discussed. The seminar will be taught by experts with practical experience in GIS and hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. Seminar participants will learn how to process data and create hydro networks using ArcHydro, develop HEC-RAS geometry and process HEC-RAS data results, build a project in HEC-GeoHMS and prepare the data files for HEC-HMS, and set up projects within the HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS environments.
ArcHydro is a set of tools for extracting hydrologic data from a digital elevation model (DEM) in the ArcMap application. These data include watershed boundaries, stream networks, and other watershed parameters used for the development of hydrologic models. ArcHydro is the preprocessor for HEC-GeoHMS. HEC-GeoHMS prepares the layers generated by ArcHydro for use in the HEC-HMS hydrologic program. In combination with GIS data layers for soils, land cover, and rainfall, HECGeoHMS has several widely used methods available for computing loss parameters for input into the HEC-HMS program.
HEC-GeoRAS is both a pre-processor and post-processor for the HEC-RAS hydraulic model. Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst are required to run the extension. As a preprocessor, HEC-GeoRAS allows users to create HEC-RAS import files containing geometric attribute data from an existing digital terrain model (DTM) and complementary data sets. HEC-GeoRAS also post-processes results from the HEC-RAS program. In addition to the layers used in the preprocessing phase, water surface extents and velocity data can be imported into the GIS for floodplain mapping, wetland restoration, and other purposes.
Seminar Benefits and Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this seminar, you will be able to:
- Explain the 3 functional surfaces supported in ArcGIS
- Discuss the common ArcGIS geoprocessing and raster analysis tools used in water resources modeling
- Use HEC-GeoRAS to develop a HEC-RAS model and process model results
- Apply the geospatial tools in HEC-RAS to georeference existing models and view model results with RAS Mapper
- Apply ArcGIS tools and the Arc Hydro extension to process terrain data and develop model parameters
- Construct a HEC-HMS model with HEC-GeoHMS
Instructor(s) will observe student performance during multiple computer workshop problems, and students will take a test at the end of the class with questions addressing these items. The test will be graded in class by their classmates as the instructor goes over each question and answer.
Via email, approximately 5 days prior to the seminar, workshop participants receive the following publications and software:
- ArcHydro, HEC-GeoRAS, and HEC-GeoHMS software (latest version)
- HEC-GeoRAS and HEC-GeoHMS User Manuals (on CD)
- Course Notes and Workshop Solutions
Engineers, water resource planners, and GIS staff who are currently performing, or at some point plan to perform, hydraulic or hydrologic analyses using HEC-RAS or HEC-HMS. Familiarity with Arc-GIS is desirable but not required.
