Instructor Information: Sanjeev Kumar, P.E.
Geotechnical analysis and design require “accurate estimation” of soil and rock parameters developed either through field tests, laboratory tests, or a combination of both. Design engineers rely significantly on the soil and rock properties developed through field tests and laboratory tests. Therefore, all civil engineers should be well familiar with different methods of field tests, sampling techniques, various types of samples required to perform high quality geotechnical experiments and analyses, and how to perform repeatable and quality laboratory tests.

Engineers and technicians normally learn and train themselves about the geotechnical laboratory tests by working with their peers or taking short courses. In our current engineering education system, instructions about important laboratory tests, including purpose of the experiments, theoretical background, experimental procedures, collection of data, interpretation of the data, application of the results to real world situations, etc., are provided either by graduate students or instructors who have limited knowledge and experience with laboratory experiments. As a result, the training engineers, technicians, and students receive is often incomplete, inconsistent, and lacks quality and connection with professional practice. Therefore, this set of on-demand seminars was developed to teach geotechnical engineering laboratory testing to students, technicians, engineers, and anyone else who is interested in this topic. The courses provide Complete, Consistent, and Professional Practice (C2P2) Oriented Geotechnical laboratory testing training.
These courses have been developed to bring laboratory testing of soils to your office or classroom. Detailed discussion is provided on why a particular geotechnical engineering test needs to be performed, list of equipment needed, step-by-step procedure to perform the test with appropriate references to ASTM standards, how to record the data on data sheets, how to reduce the data to develop soil parameters and how the parameters are used by geotechnical engineers to design a real-world project. These courses are an excellent tool to learn how to perform repeatable and quality geotechnical laboratory tests.
