Description
View Important System Requirements for running this course.
All soils in nature have some amount of water in their pores and presence of water strongly affects the engineering behavior of soils. Understanding flow of water in soils is of paramount importance for calculating seepage through earth embankments and levees, seepage through foundation soils under the dams and levees, calculating pumping rate of groundwater for many different purposes, movement of contaminants, etc. The rate of settlement of foundations built of clays also depends on the permeability of clays. To some extent, stability of slopes is dependent on flow of water.

Learning Objectives:
- Importance of permeability
- Explaining type of flow with the aid of examples
- Darcy’s law and theory of constant head permeability
- Bernoulli’s equation as it applies to flow of water through soils
- Constant head permeability test based on ASTM standard
- Significance of coefficient of permeability
- Possible errors associated with the test
