Purpose and Background
Since the advent of stream restoration, the design focus has primarily been placed on the concept of determining and designing the stable channel form. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to the importance of the geomorphic flood plain and how the hydraulics of flow interaction of diverging and converging flows from the channel and floodplain are critical for stable channel design and construction. The importance of the flood plain has long been known, however, very little design guidance has been provided and a significant amount of stream restoration, flood mitigation and stream relocation projects have missed this critical consideration in the design process. By observing the successes and failures of many natural channel based projects, the presenter has identified the need for more awareness and a conscientious focus on flood plain design by practitioners and reviewers. This one hour webinar shares insights into the importance of the proper design of floodplains, visually presents these concepts using graphics, design examples, and case studies of failure and success of stream restoration projects. This webinar is a continuation of an introduction to stream restoration for technical professionals and is organized in a manner that does not require attendance of each webinar in this series. The principles of stable channel form and sediment transport will be highlighted in each webinar while providing a greater level of detail about how flood plain flows function to promote stability when properly designed.
