Policies and System Requirements for Viewing this Course
INSTRUCTORS:
James Heyen, P.E.
Sarah Harvey, GISP
Participants will have access to the virtual workshop video archives and materials for 60 days from the start day of the workshop.
Virtual Workshop Brief
This intensive, two-part, virtual workshop will prepare engineers to use the RAS Mapper extension of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling computer program. Guided by experts in the water resources discipline, participants will attend two 2-hour sessions focused on practical applications of RAS Mapper for the development of hydraulic models and for the interpretation and mapping of model results. The first session will focus on using RAS Mapper’s built-in GIS-based tools for creating geospatially accurate HEC-RAS model geometries. The second session will explore RAS Mapper’s powerful capabilities for visualizing, reviewing, interpreting, and mapping hydraulic modeling results. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the principles and techniques presented by completing practical, hands-on exercises between sessions.
Learning Outcomes and Benefits for Participants
Participants who complete this virtual workshop will be able to demonstrate how modern hydraulic models can, and must, employ advanced geospatial capabilities to produce practical, accurate, and functional results. That knowledge will allow them to produce accurate, informative, and geospatially correct mapping products that seamlessly integrate hydraulic modeling results with other data across project disciplines.
In summary, participants will be able to:
- Explain the capabilities of RAS Mapper for efficiently developing geospatially correct HEC-RAS model geometries
- Apply RAS Mapper’s geospatial capabilities can assist the hydraulic modeler to identify hydraulic model deficiencies, refine their hydraulic models, and produce more accurate results
- To develop and export hydraulic modeling results in the form of water surface inundation mapping and the mapping of a variety of additional hydraulic parameters
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
The virtual workshop will include regular interactive elements such as group discussions and question-and-answer periods. Further, participants will directly apply training material to practical, hands-on exercises between training sessions. Necessary data and instructions will be provided to guide participants through the steps involved in developing HEC-RAS model geometry, visualizing and interpreting hydraulic model results, and producing flood inundation mapping based on those results. Following the hands-on exercises, participants will review and discuss the material with the course instructor to ensure that learning objectives are met.
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
This virtual workshop is worth .4 CEUs/4 PDHs. In order to receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test within 60 days of the virtual workshop.
Who should attend?
Civil Engineers, Hydraulic Engineers, Civil Engineering Staff, GIS Analysts, GIS Technicians, and Water Resources Planners in both public and private practice.
