Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
Subsurface flow (SF) constructed wetlands or subsurface gravel wetlands offer a viable means of removing pollutants from stormwater runoff and stream-base flow. SF gravel wetlands utilize a combination of biological, physical, and chemical mechanisms to achieve pollutant removal and have presented some of the highest removal efficiencies of any BMP. While there is plenty of information on using SF wetlands to treat wastewater, there is very limited information on stormwater BMP’s, which are highly efficient and cost-effective. This webinar will discuss the benefits and limitations of using SF wetlands for the removal of pollutants from runoff, small streams, and seeps.
Primary Discussion Topics
This webinar will present the design of three recently constructed SF wetlands to culminate discussion.
The speaker will discuss:
- Introduction to SF wetlands and design guidance resources
- Benefits of SF wetland and pollutant removal efficiency
- Industry applications for bio-engineering and water treatment
- Varying design criteria across the United States
- Post-construction monitoring and challenges
