Instructor Information: Tuncer B. Edil, Ph.D, P.E., DGE
Course Length: 1 Hour
This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Geo-Institute and ASCE Continuing Education.
Purpose and Background
Coal combustion products provide significant cost savings and enhanced performance in geotechnical applications. Simultaneously they contribute to sustainable construction. This one hour webinar will discuss old and new applications in geotechnical construction for achieving sustainable outcomes.
It will draw from the research and experience of the leaders of the Recycled Materials Resource Center and the literature.
Topics to be covered include:
- Widely used CCPs in geotechnical applications: fly ash and bottom ash
- Types and attributes of fly ashes in relation to geotechnical applications
- Pavement applications: subgrade stabilization, base/sub-base stabilization, subbase replacement with bottom ash
- Structural fill and embankment applications
- Geotechnical design
- Leaching characteristics
- Regulations
Civil and environmental engineers need to consider the life cycle impacts of earthen construction (highways, airfields, levees, dams, etc.) and select materials and methods with these considerations in mind. Coal combustion products solve problems in geotechnical applications with enhanced performance and often lower cost while contributing to sustainable construction.
Learning Outcomes
You will learn about types of coal combustion products, their characteristics, appropriate applications for them and available design properties. You will be introduced to quantitative rating of alternatives relative to life cycle impacts and costs.
Webinar Benefits
- Learn latest applications and methods for using coal combustion products in pavement
- Examine possibilities and benefits of employing CCPs in design
- Learn new technical solutions to expedite construction and improve long-term performance
- Become more competitive
- Learn about quantitative methods of designing earthen structures and pavements with CCPs
- Learn how to assess potential environmental impacts of CCPs and relative regulations
- Be in concert with the ASCE Code of Ethics relative to “sustainability”
Intended Audience
Construction engineers, materials engineers, geotechnical engineers, highway engineers, environmental engineers, government engineers, highway planners, public works engineers and environmental regulators will benefit from this webinar.
