Instructor Information: Matthew Zeve, P.E. CFM, M.ASCE
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
The use of the unsteady flow simulation features of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center’s HEC-RAS software program requires the use of a geometry pre-processor to complete the hydraulic calculations. The correct selection of geometric parameters and review of the pre-processor output is an important factor in the successful execution of an unsteady flow simulation. The geometry pre-processor in HEC-RAS calculates a series of curves that describe the geometric and hydraulic properties of cross–section, bridges, culverts, and weirs. The HEC-RAS modeler can modify several variables that affect the calculation of these curves. An understanding of the curves and how they can be modified is a key component of an unsteady flow simulation. This seminar will provide an overview of geometry pre-processor in HEC-RAS. The webinar will be designed for HEC-RAS users that have some familiarity with unsteady flow simulations. Discussion will be provided on the geometry pre-processor variable selection, output, and how the pre-processor results affect the hydraulic calculations.
Learning Objectives
This webinar will provide engineers with an in-depth explanation of the geometry pre-processor used in the HEC-RAS software package. Participants will be able to understand the importance of proper geometry processing and gain insight on interpreting how the model geometry influences hydraulic computations.
Seminar Benefits
- Gain an understanding of the geometry pre-processor program
- Discuss variables applicable to geometry pre-processing
- Learn how to interpret and improve pre-processing results
- See examples from HEC-RAS models
Intended Audience
Civil engineers seeking more detail on the geometry pre-processing portion of an unsteady flow simulation using the HEC-RAS software program will benefit from this webinar. Participants should be familiar with using the unsteady flow simulation feature of HEC-RAS software program before taking this course.
Seminar Outline
- Geometry pre-processor description
- Pre-processing variables
- How to interpret pre-processor output
- How to improve pre-processing results
- Examples of how pre-processor results affect hydraulic calculations
