Purpose and Background
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center’s HEC-RAS software program is a widely used tool for various openchannel hydraulics analysis and design tasks. Oftentimes, the hydraulic design and analysis tasks involves the consideration of structures such as bridges, weirs, and culverts in a channel. When this is the case, the use of the ineffective areas often comes into consideration.
Although modeling bridges, culverts, and other structures is a common task in a hydraulic study, many engineers are uncertain when it comes to the application of ineffective flow areas in HEC-RAS models. Additionally, ineffective flow areas take on extra significance for un-steady flow simulations in HEC-RAS, so the proper implementation of ineffective flow areas is important to understand.
This webinar will provide participants who have a strong background using HEC-RAS with a better understanding of the role of ineffective flow areas. The purpose, various applications, proper use, and review of how to set ineffective flow areas will be discussed. The presentation will include several screen captures from HEC-RAS models to illustrate the points made during the discussion.
