Sponsored by ASCE Continuing Education and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI).
INSTRUCTOR: William L. Coulbourne, P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE
Purpose and BackgroundWind design for industrial facilities is not explicitly covered in the ASCE 7 wind loads sections, even though many building and component shapes are included. ASCE has published a guide titled Wind Loads for Petrochemical and Other Industrial Facilities and it has been used as a primary wind design guide for industrial facility types. This webinar presents the methods suggested in the ASCE publication. It couples that information with the newly revised wind design information available in ASCE 7-16.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Wind design for bins, tanks and silos newly added to ASCE 7-16
- Use of wind force equations in the ASCE guide on industrial facilities
- New wind speed maps in ASCE 7-16 and the link of design wind speeds with structural reliability
- Examples that demonstrate use of provisions and expected results
Learning Outcomes
- Learn about the wind design changes in ASCE 7-16 as applied to wind design for industrial facilities
- Become acquainted with the important connection between design wind speeds and structural reliability
- Discuss how to handle wind design issues peculiar to industrial facilities
- Become familiar with orders of magnitude wind pressure solutions for typical industrial problems
Webinar Benefits
- Learn the new and revised ASCE 7-16 wind provisions
- Improve wind design for industrial clients
- Reduce cost of wind design for industrial clients
- Learn what issues still are not well known regarding wind design for industrial clients
- Become familiar with the ASCE wind design guide for industrial facilities
- Become more of a wind design expert for your clients
Intended Audience
- Structural engineers
- Wind engineers
- Architects involved in Industrial facility planning
- Design/build contractors involved in industrial facility constructions
Webinar Outline
- Review changes in wind design using ASCE 7-16
- Using the ASCE publication Wind Loads for Petrochemical and Other Industrial Facilities
- Design wind speeds and structural reliability
- Tanks, bins, silos, pipes racks, open walkways, ladders
