Description
System Requirements for Viewing this Course
Sponsored by ASCE Continuing Education and the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI).
INSTRUCTOR: Joe Wagner, P.E., D.NE, M.ASCE
Purpose and Background
Beneficial dredged material uses include environmental restoration and land reclamation instead of conventional disposal, treating sediment as a resource rather than a waste material. Beneficial uses such as beach nourishment, habitat development, and brownfields restoration require evaluation of water and sediment chemistry and geotechnical properties plus consideration of federal, state and local regulatory frameworks.
Primary Discussion Topics
- The case for beneficial uses of dredged material
- Typical dredging projects and their beneficial use opportunities
- Cost sharing and beneficial uses
- Elements of a project study for beneficial uses
- Case studies
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the types of Beneficial Use projects and their benefits
- Be able to implement the regulations for Federal vs. local cost shares
- Identify methods to reclaim dredged material from containment sites
- Learn the soil and water tests necessary to characterize dredged material as suitable for beneficial uses
Webinar Benefits
- Learn how to make dredging projects more sustainable
- Understand beneficial uses costs and how they differ from other dredging costs
- Make a case for beneficial uses to overcome traditional dredging opposition
- Discuss the rationale for cost sharing for different project types
- Learn how to reclaim dredged material from previously filled containment sites
- Learn how nourishment from dredging projects can prolong the life of beaches and reduce storm damage
- Understand how the Water Resources Acts have changed the prospects of beneficial uses
