Purpose and Background
Sustainable development entails maintaining and improving quality of life indefinitely without degrading the quantity, quality or availability of natural, economic, and social resources. Access and mobility are key elements in connecting people to economic and social opportunities to improve their quality of life. This course examines the evolving state of the practice in defining, measuring, and achieving more sustainable access and mobility throughout all stages of a project life-cycle from planning and design, to implementation, operation, and reuse/removal. The course reviews basic definitions for access and mobility and ways in which these concepts can be measured for both transport and non-transport projects. The course reviews the state of the practice for measuring sustainable access and mobility from a holistic, top-down perspective and from sustainability certification systems currently in use, considering both overarching concepts as well as case studies.

Learning Outcomes
The primary learning outcomes for the Access & Mobility course are:
- Define sustainable access and mobility
- Explain how sustainability is related to other transportation paradigms such as livability, land use, context-sensitive solutions, community participation and complete streets
- Incorporate sustainable access and mobility throughout the development cycle (planning, programming, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and renovation/removal)
- Select appropriate tools from a wide range of traditional and emerging sustainability performance measures for access and mobility
- Apply sustainable access and mobility performance measures that appropriately incorporate the effect of project design on influencing traveler behavior
- Be familiar with several case studies that exemplify improved sustainability for access and mobility planning, design, construction, and operations in locations across the US
- Include practitioners across a wide range of disciplines as helpful to maximize potential for co-benefits and foster advocacy.- Actively engage in sustainability evaluation process development; current measures, tools, and case studies are continually being updated
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
