“The teleconference method allows the audience to see this webinar straight from my office, without having to travel. I have attended many ASCE webinars and find that ASCE knows how to put together an effective webinar.”—Anonymous Attendee
Purpose and Background
Pavement markings provide guidance and information to road users for both daytime and nighttime use. The FHWA has issued its proposed rule on the new pavement marking retroreflectivity standards. If a final rule is adopted, the new requirements and recommendations will be officially added to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This webinar will describe the FHWA’s proposed changes to the MUTCD, which are expected to add a new requirement that highway agencies establish and implement a method for maintaining minimum levels of retroreflectivity for longitudinal lines.
- Reasoning behind the proposed changes
- Methods for complying with the new MUTCD requirements and recommendations
- Anticipated minimum retroreflectivity values and how they are to be applied
- How highway agencies may be judged to be in compliance with the new requirements
- How agencies can better position themselves to comply with the new requirements
Learning Outcomes
- Understand FHWA’s proposed requirements and recommendations that are expected to be added to the MUTCD for providing minimum maintained levels of retroreflectivity for pavement markings
- Learn which pavement markings are to comply with the new requirements
- Know the common methods that highway agencies can utilize to manage the retroreflectivity of their markings
- Know how agencies will likely be considered to be in compliance with the new requirements
Webinar Benefits
- Gain advanced knowledge of proposed pavement marking retroreflectivity requirements that are planned to be added to the MUTCD
- Learn what markings are to be subject to the new retroreflectivity requirements
- Understand the proposed methods for maintaining retroreflectivity of longitudinal markings at or above the specified retroreflectivity levels
- Learn the proposed pavement marking retroreflectivity values and how they should be applied
- Know how pavement-marking retroreflectivity is measured
- If the FHWA publishes the final rule on the proposed requirements before the webinar date, up-to-date discussion of the officially adopted language will be included in the presentation, including any published compliance dates
Intended Audience
- Engineers and technicians involved in the design, use, application, or selection of materials for highway pavement markings
- Professionals responsible for the study of roadway safety and operations
- Individuals involved in developing pavement-marking standards, policies, and procedures
- State highway, city public works, and county road personnel
- Individuals responsible for the design, maintenance, or operation of streets and highways
Webinar Outline
- Reasons for the proposed pavement marking retroreflectivity requirements
- Markings subject to the new retroreflectivity requirements
- How compliance can be achieved
- Calibrated visual nighttime inspection method
- Consistent parameters visual night-time inspection method
- Measured retroreflectivity method
- Service life, based on monitored markings
- Blanket replacement method
- Markings excluded from minimum retroreflectivity requirements
- Perspectives to consider when preparing for and implementing a method
