This is a hands-on seminar. You must bring your own laptop.
Purpose and Background
The viability of the highway infrastructure relies heavily on optimized pavement design, efficient materials production and economical construction practices. Predicting the pavement life cycle and developing maintenance and rehabilitation strategies are also keys to high-performing pavement structures. Though these are complex topics, they are highly interwoven and developing a simplified understanding is important to the practicing engineer.
This seminar is designed to take both the experienced everyday pavement designer and the newcomer and introduce them to the simplified world of pavement design using modern computational tools such as WESLEA for Windows and PaveXpress. After a brief introductory overview of flexible pavements, attendees will go in-depth with individual teaching sessions on Pavement Mechanics, Material Properties, Traffic, Pavement Distresses, Structural Design, Production & Construction Limitations, Pavement Life Cycle, Overlay Designs, and Porous Asphalt Pavements. Hands-on activities with the computational tools will engage participants in design examples to develop practical experience using the programs and gain deeper understanding of the course topics.
Seminar Benefits
- Learn to use PaveXpress, a free web-based tool for new and overlay asphalt pavement design
- Understand the inner workings of AASHTO empirical pavement design procedures
- Learn how to model asphalt pavements to handle any design situation with WESLEA for Windows
- Develop better structural pavement designs
- Gain insight into asphalt material properties
- Understand asphalt pavement distress types and how to identify them
- Develop a practical knowledge of real-world production & construction limitations
Learning Outcomes
- Learn how to compute flexible pavement responses using layered elastic analysis by working design examples with modern analysis software (WESLEA for Windows).
- Gain insight and understanding to asphalt material properties, how they are affected by the environment, and ultimately how they influence the pavement's structural capacity
- Understand traffic characterization and how to compute equivalent single axle loads for pavement design by utilizing computational spreadsheet with example traffic data
- Review asphalt pavement distress types, learn what causes them, how to diagnose them, and what effect they have on the pavement's serviceability rating
- Execute pavement designs with the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide approach by working design examples with the PaveXpress software
- Learn about asphalt pavement production and construction practices and why there are some practical limitations to pavement designs
- Understand the importance of good pavement management strategies and how they can positively affect the pavement's life cycle cost
- Execute overlay designs with the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide approach by working design examples with the PaveXpress software
- Learn about porous asphalt pavements, the unique role they play, and how to develop structural values for their use in pavement design
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Learning objectives are achieved through case studies, demonstrations, classroom discussion, and a short post test.
Who Should Attend?
This seminar is intended for all pavement design professionals, whether they have been performing designs for years, are new to the world of pavement design, or they are simply interested in gaining a better understanding of how pavement design works. Engineers, architects, designers, contractors, inspectors and other pavement professionals in both private and public practice will benefit.
