INSTRUCTOR: Frank L. Bennardo, P.E.
Co-sponsored by ASCE's Architectural Engineering Institute and ASCE Continuing Education.
When a building is under construction, building components are evaluated for efficacy and compatibility. This webinar focuses on doors and windows. It discusses how to find and use approved window and door product performance information, what design components can and cannot be modified, the impact standards and water filtration requirements, and adapting ASCE 7 design pressure requirements to product performance limitations. Other topics include the effects of altering window and doors sizes beyond their approved limits, understanding of small, medium, large, and enhanced impact ratings, and static and cyclical design forces and test requirements.
Purpose and Background
Building Product Evaluations play an increasingly important role in design, construction, plan review, and insurability of structures. This webinar explores the components of the most common evaluations, windows and doors from a variety of sources and discuss how they can be adapted to unique situations in a code compliant manor. Limitations of use of these evaluations are also discussed, along with resources for finding, submitting, and approving them.
Primary Discussion Topics
• How to find and use approved window & door product performance information
• Learn what design components can and cannot be modified
• Understand impact standards and water infiltration requirements
• Learn to Adapt ASCE 7 design pressure requirements to product performance limitations
Learning Outcomes
• Effects of altering window and door sizes beyond their approvals
• Limitations of anchorage and substrate requirements
• Understanding of small, medium, large, and enhanced impact ratings
• Learn the limitations and requirements for water infiltration resistance
• Understanding of static and cyclical design forces, test requirements
• Substitution of materials and components within the evaluation
• How to find, help to improve, and syndicate approval content to sources in need.
Webinar Benefits
• Expand window and door product limitations while remaining code compliant
• Avoid mistakes made in fenestration opening design
• Fix field issues beyond product limitations
• Quickly find product performance information
• Aid clients in insurability of buildings
• Quickly and accurately respond to plan review comments
• Better protect against future storm events, high heat, and extreme cold.
Intended Audience
• Structural design and forensic engineers
• Plan review engineers
• Field inspectors
• Building product evaluators
• Code Compliance Administrators
Webinar Outline
• Introduction to product evaluations, their sources, benefits and limitations of each
• Review of the components of window and door evaluations
• Discussion on what can and can’t be altered from the approved design
• Common installation issues will be identified, including remedies and ramifications
• Correlation of product performance criteria with building code and ASCE design forces
• Introduction to the direction of product performance information, industry connectivity, and connection to services and other resources.
