PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
It is not uncommon for young professionals or emerging engineers to find themselves lacking the leadership and management skills required to help them through the initial phases of their career. The Supercharge Your Career Series is a self-facilitated program that is designed to remedy this by providing a meaningful education experience for developing engineers working towards licensure as professional engineers, and also for those actively engaged in their professional development as practicing professional engineers. The program focuses on engineers with less than ten years’ experience, and is suitable for engineers following a variety of career paths. It touches on many of the core competencies as stated in the ASCE Body of Knowledge, and provides content that addresses the issues facing young engineers including globalization and advanced technology.
In the first module, Initiation, you will be introduced to the concept of the project life cycle. Emphasis is placed on scoping projects, which includes understanding the proposal process, developing a responsive scope of services, outlining a feasible project schedule and budget. Also discussed are negotiation, project contracts and an introduction to the procurement process.
In the second module, Organizing, you will learn how to organize your project for success. This entails the development of work plans to complete the required deliverables on time and on budget. Organizing and leading your project's team will be an important aspect to successful project execution. Setting milestones and scheduling meetings to make sure everyone is on track and help resolve problems as they arise will help you stay ahead of the game. You will also learn some strategies to address unexpected surprises that may arise during the execution of your project.
In the third module, Project Controls, you will learn how to control aspects during project execution such as resource tracking, invoices, and change orders. Participants will learn how invoices are assembled for projects and how the schedule and budget can be used in conjunction with invoices to ensure your project is 'on track.' Strategies for identifying and managing scope creep are presented as well as strategies to manage client expectations should changes to the original project configuration occur. Finally, aspects of project close out will be presented.
